Okay, I’ll admit it … I love making New Year’s Resolutions.
I know they’re not for everyone, and I get it, but there’s just something about getting a clean new slate at the beginning of every year that motivates and inspires me. Now, I’ve held my fair share of resolutions, and I have to be honest – the most difficult part isn’t coming up with the list, it’s remembering what I even wrote down.
How can I be motivated and stay on the right track if I’m not getting a constant reminder of what I’m working towards? With everything going on in your daily life, what can you do to stay grounded and focused on your goals, whether big or small? It may sound impossible (and overwhelming), but I assure you, it’s not!
In the spirit of instilling New Year cheer (and maybe converting some of you to become a “resolution-lover” like myself), I have created a short but sweet list of the different ways that I’ve found have helped me stay aligned with my yearly goals.
1. Make A List
Timeless, classic, need I say more? For all my folks who love nothing more than putting good ol’ pen to paper, this is for you. In fact, a study by Dr. Gail Matthews, a psychology professor at the Dominican University of California, showcased that by writing down your New Year’s Resolutions, you can improve your success rate in achieving them long-term by 42%. So, whether you like your list neat and organized or decorated with pops of color, your list should be uniquely you. Once your list is complete, I suggest displaying your list in any area that is easily accessible to your eyes! This could be your work desk or office, your bedroom, or even your bathroom. I know this may sound over the top, but don’t knock it till you try it!
2. Use Your Phone!
At this point in time, what can’t our phones do? They can track how many steps you take in a day, how much time you spend on social media in a week, and yes, they can even help you keep track of your resolutions! If you’re someone who loves tracking and seeing progress, this is definitely up your alley. I will say, though, that if you have resolutions that focus more on the bigger picture, this may not be for you. Ideally, this works best for those of you who are trying to create daily habits or lifestyle changes.
If you like a clean and basic layout, try Strides: Goal & Habit Tracker. With Strides, you can track anything—good or bad habits and SMART goals—with reminders to hold you accountable and charts to keep you motivated.
If you want something visually appealing and elegant, try Habitudes, Daily habit tracker (a personal favorite). With Habitudes, you can personalize your habits, note your achievements, and be rewarded for your successes!
These are just the two apps that I’ve found have worked well for me, but feel free to peruse the different apps that are available and will better suit your needs!
3. Create A Vision Board!
Vision Boards are my everything. If you’re like me and lean more towards creativity and freedom of expression, then this is my ultimate #1 tip for staying aligned with your New Year’s Resolutions. Vision Boards represent the mental, emotional, and spiritual inspirations and aspirations of the person who creates them. With this being said, there are no limits on how you choose to create your board. You can create digital vision boards through websites like Canva and download images to your computer, or you can go the traditional route by using poster boards and printed images or magazine cutouts.
Next is the fun part – putting it all together and displaying it somewhere you can see it! I prefer creating my vision boards digitally because I like to set them as the background on my computer, but I strongly urge that you display your boards somewhere easily accessible! Again, it could be your bedroom, your office, or your bathroom, as long as it’s somewhere that you can see daily.
Now it’s your turn! I hope that this list has, at the very least, inspired you to take on your resolutions in 2024 in ways that work for you!
